similarities and differences at work in Croatia

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Family and friends regularly ask me what it’s like to work here in Croatia, and I usually just say, “It’s different.” I often find myself lacking the right words to explain how it is different, thinking, “You just have to live in this crazy place to understand.” Sometimes I tell the story about how I was flipping through photos of a client’s vehicle fleet that I was designing graphics for and I noticed one truck

Celebrating Krnjeval (Carnival) in Split

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Last Tuesday people around the world celebrated the pre-Lent festival known as Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, Carnival, or Krnjeval here in Split. The people in Split put on an impressive celebration despite the rainy weather. It may not have had the festive colors and elaborate costumes of Rio de Janeiro or Venice, but it sure beat any Mardi Gras I’ve seen before.

Croatia’s Museum Night

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

We started out the evening at the museum in Split’s old city hall. It was all about the history of Split (with a lot of old photos and a lot to read) and seemed like the perfect exhibit to start off Croatia’s ‘NOC MUZEJA’ or Museum Night. The exhibit covered everything from historical preservation to installing wayfinding signage in the city to the rebuilding of the Riva. We found the photos and information

The move was bittersweet. Why we moved: The main reason we moved was to be closer to town. There was a lot we loved about our old place

New Year’s Weekend: Split, Ljubljana, and Zagreb

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

A light rain fell on and off all weekend, and some weekends we would’ve just hibernated, but last weekend we were out and about every day. We definitely didn’t let the rain dampen our New Year’s weekend. Luckily it was never a hard blowing rain, so an umbrella kept us dry for the most part.

Christmas in Croatia

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

This was probably the most relaxing Christmas I’ve ever had. Christmas Eve we got dressed up, went into town, had lunch with our friend, Paula, and walked around enjoying the decorations and carolers. We came upon a group of guys singing Silent Night (in Croatian) a cappella. They had beautiful voices and the small alleyway seemed to magnify their voices.
