I had a reverse experience – went to US and stayed there for five years…
I would certainly advise you to check out the continental Croatia, since it is quite different than living at the coast…

Go see Varaždin, Čakovec, Koprivnica – nice cities up north, nort-east, see Slavonia (Osijek, Vinkovci…). Food and way of life differ there…
